Anthems for Recovery (+ Bonus Spotify Playlist!)
I don’t know about you guys, but music is a huge part of my life. I like to make playlists for every occasion, weather and emotion. I make seasonal playlists, playlists for characters that exist only in my head, and playlists for very specific days. So it won’t come as a surprise to you that I finally, finally, made a playlist of recovery anthems.
These songs are liberating and exhilarating. Some have a ‘fuck you’ vibe whilst others are more reflective, but they’re all songs that I find myself listening to time and time again when I need a boost on my recovery journey. So let’s break down some of my favourites on the list.
Wilson Phillips - Hold On.
Favourite lyric: Is it really fair to feel this way inside?
Why?: I know a lot of us going through recovery find it tough to challenge our thinking, and this whole song is basically about asking yourself what you’re willing to put up with as far as treating yourself like shit goes.
Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield
Favourite lyric: The rest is still unwritten
Why?: This song is an absolute BELTER. It’s all about embracing the possibilities of life and deciding to take a leap. The choir really make me want to throw open every window in my house. The song ends with the line ‘the rest is still unwritten’, leaving the listener pondering the fact that nothing in their life is set. All they have is this moment, and that’s liberating.
One Girl Revolution - Superchick
Favourite lyric: I declare my independence from the critics and the stones, I can find my revolution I can learn to stand alone
Why?: This song is a banger for anyone resisting, both in their personal life and in a wider social setting. It’s empowering and kick-ass, and I imagine that Wonder Woman would greatly approve of this song.
It’s On - Superchick
Favourite Lyric: And no matter how you feel, it’s what you do that matters.
Why?: The second Superchick song on the list! Seriously, if you’re looking for some empowerment, please check out this band. They soothed my 16-year-old soul, and continue to do so as I approach 30. Recovery is really hard. There are lots of moments when you want to give up because it’s so hard, but this song is all about pushing through and not just dragging yourself through the hard bits, but also kicking them in the face.
This Is Me - The Greatest Showman
Favourite Lyric: The whole damn song.
Why?: Seriously? Listen to it! This song is a huge empowerment anthem for anyone who feels broken and out of place.
The rest of the playlist is available on Spotify! If there are any songs that you think I totally missed out on, let me know in the comments!
