How To Handle The Worst Days

Let’s set the scene, shall we?

It’s day 3. You’re lying in bed and you can smell your own breath. You haven’t changed out of whatever you’re wearing, and you’re definitely still wearing the same underwear. Your bedroom smells like old food, and the bin in the corner if overflowing with crap. The weight of responsibility is pushing down on you, making you sink further into the bed. You have so much to do. You have bills to pay and appointments to make. But you can’t. Why? Because this is one of the Worst Days. It goes beyond a normal Bad Day. This is the Worst, and you feel stuck.

I’m going to tell you how to drag yourself out of that pit. It’s going to take some willpower on your part, but I promise you, you will get out of this. The best way to look at this is a series of small steps to create a big change. The best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time!

So, let’s dive in.

GET OUT OF BED

This can feel like a huge step, and frankly, it is. None of the other stuff is going to happen unless you get out of bed. Swing your legs over the edge of the bed and place your feet on the floor. Sit up. Stand up. Congratulations, you just completed the first step!

GET IN THE SHOWER

You stink. I know it, you know it. I’ve been there and I know the old familiar smells (emphasis on the word old). Drag yourself into the bathroom and put your clothes in the laundry hamper. Turn on the water and get in and scrub. Scrub away the last 3 days. Use nice soap! Deep condition your hair if you so wish. Just wash your body.

GET DRESSED

Once you’re showered, it’s time to put some new clothes on! But before you do that, I’d recommend moisturising. This always makes me feel a lot better, especially when I use a nice lotion like Lush’s Sleepy lotion. When you’ve done that, find some clean comfy clothes and put them on.

LET NATURE IN AND HYDRATE

By now you should be feeling slightly more alert. Hurrah! Now it’s time to give that feeling to your environment. Open the curtains or blinds in your room (or whole house if you can). Crack open a window. Get a glass of water and stand in front of the open window and drink it.

DO ONE SMALL CHORE

What you do is entirely up to you, but do something. Empty that bin, do some laundry, pay a bill. Do one thing, and I promise you you’ll feel so much better afterwards. You might even be spurred on by the sense of accomplishment, in which case you can do another chore! Do whatever you feel comfortable with, but do something.

RELAX

Congratulations! You’ve done a lot today and you should feel proud of that! Now it’s time to relax. Get yourself something good to eat, sit on the sofa (not your bed) and relax. Watch your favourite box set or a movie. Read a book. Just chill. Reward yourself for all the effort you’ve put into yourself today, and get ready to do it all again tomorrow.
