5 Steps To The Perfect Morning Routine

Ahh, morning routines. The often preached about, rarely followed, holy grail of productivity and self-actualisation. Does anyone else see blog posts where people lay out their perfectly polished morning routine, full of meditation and green juice, and want to cry? I know I do.

Healthy routines are something I struggle with on a daily basis, and often only something I can achieve when I’m employed. Why? Because I know it’s vital to me having a good day at work. But I can’t seem to crack it when I’m unemployed. This is probably because I care very little about my free time, but more on that in another post.

Over the years I have read almost every article about morning routines and how important they are, and I think I’ve managed to distil the essence of every single article into one post. Please feel free to adjust to your liking!

PREP THE NIGHT BEFORE

The whole shebang with having a good morning routine starts the night before. Sort your shit out. Prep your breakfast, your bag and your outfit. Get into bed at a reasonable time and exercise some discipline when it comes to whatever you’re binging on Netflix.

GET UP AT THE SAME TIME EVERY DAY

Ugh. But I don’t wannaaaa. Well kids, unfortunately, you have to. Your body will adjust sooner rather than later so that painful time of hauling yourself out of bed at 7 am won’t last very long, but it’s got to happen. This includes on the weekends and days off. You can allow for an extra hour or so, but don’t stray too far from your normal waking time otherwise, you’ll throw the whole system out of whack.

DON’T LOOK AT YOUR PHONE YET

This is the worst, but again probably a good idea. God only knows what happened whilst you were asleep. Tomorrow you could wake up to yet more threats of nuclear war, but the only way you’re gonna stop it from spoiling your zen morning routine is by not checking your phone. The end of the world can wait until at least after breakfast.

EAT AND DRINK SOMETHING

Drink a glass of water as well as your normal coffee or tea. Eat something with slow release carbs, otherwise, you’ll never make it to lunch without lounging in your chair with a fan like a southern belle in distress in the height of summer. Your brain needs food!!!

HYGIENE

Wash your face, clean your teeth and brush your hair. Put on deodorant. Extra bonus round: put on makeup.

How easy was all that?! Now you’re ready to face the day looking and feeling all sparkly. Go forth and conquer the morning!
